Blarney Castle
While planning our Ireland Road Trip, I knew I wanted to visit Blarney Castle to see the infamous Blarney Stone. My grandmother reminisced about my late grandfather kissing the stone during a visit 20 years prior, something she refused to do, but my grandfather sure did have the gift of gab! Keep reading to find out what not to miss while you’re there!
When we arrived at the Castle, Kayleigh was asleep in the car and Nana graciously offered to sit with her. So this adventure was just me and my parents – something that’s rare these days! I must admit – I didn’t kiss the stone, neither did my parents. I’m a little grossed out by the number of lips that have been on it before mine as well as the other rumors surrounding it! As far as castles go, Blarney is nice, but on the smaller side. The Castle that you can visit today is actually the third built on the site, constructed in 1446 by Dermont McCarthy.
There is a short walk up to the castle, then you climb a few levels of a spiral staircase to get to the top – this is where the stone is. (Fun fact – the castle walls slop inwards, making it look even taller than it is!) When you get to the top, two employees flank the stone, helping you get down onto your back as you hold onto railings in order to plant your lips (if you desire) and take your picture for a few Euros.
The castle and stone didn’t quite exceed my expectations. However, the grounds of the castle, specifically Rock Close, most certainly did. It reminded me of Sintra in Portugal, just magical.
Unfortunately, with rain approaching and our toddler and grandmother left behind in the car, we didn’t have time to explore the Gardens. But we did explore Rock Close and the Forest Trail back to the visitors center. There are signs pointing to various trails and rocks of interest – such as the Witches Stone, Fairy Trail and Wishing Steps. All in all it was a really enjoyable walk, with photo ops around each and every corner! If you’re pressed for time, you’re able to complete the loop back to the visitors center within 20-30 minutes, but it will take longer if you enjoy taking pictures!
Then on your walk back, you’re treated to another beautiful view of the castle! Whatever you do, don’t miss Rock Close and the Forest Trail while visiting the Blarney Castle!
