Pretty in Portland
We were lucky enough to attend the destination wedding of my best friend, Robin, in Portland, Maine this past weekend. The weekend was lovely – especially the bride! Ben & I realized how much we really do love Maine, what a place for a vacation home someday! A few years ago (pre-Kayleigh) we took a Maine and Canada road trip, which was so much fun and stunningly beautiful! It was nice to be back in Portland for the weekend, a quaint city with adorable shops and delectable food! Watch our for our Mainada Road Trip itinerary coming soon!
If I had to pick 3 favorite Portland eats, they would be (in no specific order) … but beware, they all can have quite an associated wait. So put your name in and grab a drink somewhere locally!
- Holy Donut
- Filing potato donuts that come in unique and amazingly delicious flavors like Maple Bacon, Ginger or Berry Cannoli, Dark Chocolate Sea Salt and Coffee Cake
- Get there early and expect a line, the store closes when they sell out!
- DuckFat
- Quite possibly the BEST fries we’ve ever eaten, fried in (you guessed it), Belgian duckfat. They come with delicious dipping sauces (yeah truffle ketchup) as well as Poutine Style with cheese curds and gravy.
- They also have a small salad menu and extensive sandwiches.
- The place is super tiny and you are likely to get sat along the bar, playing with magnetic words or with others at a table – after a wait. This trip, we got there at 10:55am (they opened at 11) and there was already a line!
- Eventide
- So disappointed we didn’t make it there this time around, we thought about takeout for our drive home, but you have to wait in the line even for takeout and we didn’t have the time before hitting the road.
- The oysters are phenomenal and the Lobster Rolls are the best from our prior trip and taste-test throughout Maine and Canada! They are served two ways: warm with drawn butter and cold with mayo. We were unable to pick a favorite! {Unfortunately – I just looked at their menu and it looks like the cold lobster roll is no longer available in lobster, just crab!}
Last but not least – Ben and I can’t say that we’re huge fans of Whoopie Pies – however Wicked Whoopies may have changed that! The Wedding Welcome Bag was filled with some of the Bride & Groom’s favorites, including Billy Goat Chips from their hometown of St. Louis, MO and mini-Whoopie Pies, the official dessert of Maine! Oh man, were they tasty, the best news – you don’t have to go to Maine, they can be shipped!
Anyone have any recommendations for our next trip to Maine!?
